Meaning & History
The best known bearer of this name is the 9th-century folk saint Veronus of Lembeek. At the time, the village was located in Frankish territory, but today it is situated in the region of Flanders in Belgium.Saint Veronus was probably Frankish himself, as he is said to have been a cousin of the Frankish king Charles the Bald (823-877) and a great-grandson of Charlemagne (748-814). As such, his name is probably a latinized Germanic name, though a fully Latin origin cannot be ruled out completely. In that case, the name is most likely derived from (or related to) Latin verus meaning "true, genuine" as well as "right, just" (see Verus). In the case of a Germanic origin, the original name was probably something like Wero (also compare Wiro). Such a name was typically a short form. Often the linguistic root of these names is relatively easy to pinpoint, but not in this case, as there are several possibilities for Wero. The most notable of those are Old High German wer meaning "man", weri meaning "defence, resistance", war meaning "aware, cautious" and war meaning "true" (which is etymologically related to the aforementioned Latin verus).
