In my opinion, a valid and preferred way of spelling the name, especially considering all variants derive from the Hebrew name זְכַרְיָה (Zekharyah) meaning "Yahweh remembers", from זָכַר (zakhar) meaning "to remember" and יָה (yah) referring to the Hebrew God. The name seems to go in and out of fashion, it was popular in the late 19th and 20th centuries. Right now, I’d imagine most people named Zack are in their twenties to thirties. For that reason, it really echoes the eighties and nineties, but in a good way. Characters named ‘Zack’ (or other variants) are generally depicted as the ‘cool guy’.
The name Zack was given to 167 baby boys born in the US in 2012. Oddly enough, looking at the popularity chart for this name, it looks like Zack was more popular than Zachary at one time.
Zack can be found in many other ways. Zak, Zach, Zac. Zak is personally my favourite, but I really don't go for this name at all. 1: It reminds me of (*barf*) Zac Efron, the famous teenager from High School Musical. 2: It's quite common, and common names can sort of get old with time.
Althogh not particulary famous in reality, Zack Fair of Final Fantasy VII is famous in the gaming world. Zack was known for being soldier, first class and being Aerith Gainsborough's first love.
Zack de la Rocha! Rapper for Rage Against the Machine! Insanely cool and prone to screaming profanity. Does not like the government at all. Also, way more hardcore than the other two famous people listed here, which as of this writing are both sponsored by the Disney Channel. Ooh, BURN!

Zac Efron was in High School Musical, the worst, corniest movie ever. I think he was arrested for doing drugs.
