Meaning & History
Means "gift of joy" in Old English, from the mostly-poetic word wynn "joy, delight, bliss" combined with gifu, an alternative form of giefu "gift, present".Keeping in mind that spelling was much looser in Anglo-Saxon times, it seems that ġiefu was mainly used for the vocabulary word, while ġifu was preferred for given names.
