I am of German heritage and love many German names. This is not one of my favorites, though. It just sounds harsh.

A rather old-fashioned name in Germany. It was one of the most popular names in the 1930s and quickly fell in popularity after 1950. I do know a Waltraud in her 20's, but her name is constantly perceived as a "grandmother's name". Most people also tend to think that it means something about forests (forest = "Wald" in German). Nicknames I know from older relatives are "Traudl" and Traudi".Name day for Waltraud is April 9th.
