Meaning & History
Means "vineyards" in Spanish, derived from the title of the Virgin Mary Nuestra Señora de las Viñas meaning "Our Lady of the Vineyards". She is the patron saint of various Spanish towns, especially of the city of Aranda de Duero in the province of Burgos (where the usage of the name is most concentrated), in which a sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin is located.According to folk legend, some locals from the town of Quintanilla de las Viñas were faced with the 8th-century Muslim invasion of Spain and fled with an image of the Virgin, taking refuge near the Douro river. Years later, the Virgin appeared to a farmer from Aranda de Duero to tell him where the image was hidden and where she wanted the sanctuary to be built. As the people of the city did not believe what the farmer said, the Virgin gave him a bunch of grapes as proof.
