Vasili Arkhipov was a Russian political officer that prevented a terrified Russian captain from launching a nuclear missile at America, and thus with God's help no doubt prevented 100s of millions of deaths from a atomic war.
This name is also in use in Georgia, where it is the Georgian form of the Russian name Vasiliy. It is a fairly rare name in Georgia, but certainly more common there than Basili, the original Georgian form of Basileios (see Basil). Also see my entry for Basili in the Submitted Names Database. Vasil, which in Georgia could be considered to be a shorter form of Vasili, is most commonly used in Georgia. Also, in Georgian, Vasili is written as: ვასილი.
