It's NOT pronounced /'vɑr.doʊ/ (VAHR-do) It's pronounced /vɑr.dɔ/ (VAHR-DAW) Which is WITHOUT any stress, making it sound very feminine and pretty. If you pronounce it correctly, it won't sound like a masculine name. Besides, Vardo means "rose", it's the literal word for a rose but the last vowel is changed. So if you think that Rose/Rosie sounds ridiculous on a boy you should also think that Vardo sounds ridiculous for a boy. [noted -ed]

It may sound so bad in English, but in Georgian it's a very pretty name and it used to be very popular too. And it's definitely feminine. Just imagine Rose being a masculine name. Weird. Same with Vardo in Georgian.

To be a little bit more precise: this name is derived from Georgian ვარდი (vardi) meaning "rose". The word is actually an Armenian loanword, meaning that the Georgians have adopted this Armenian word into their own language. The original Armenian word is վարդ (vard) - also see the description for Vardan in the main database. The following entry on Wiktionary is also worth checking out:Http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E1%83%95%E1%83%90%E1%83%A0%E1%83%93%E1%83%98#Georgian.
