Meaning & History
Derived from the Old Norse elements valr meaning "the dead on a battlefield, the battle-slain" (as found in the word valkyrja) and garðr meaning "fence, defense". Alternatively the first element may be derived from Primitive Germanic *walha- meaning "Celtic, Welsh, foreign".
