Meaning & History
Possibly from Ancient Greek τύλος (tylos) meaning "callus" or "knob, knot". Tylos is a mythological character in Nonnus' epic poem Dionysiaca, where he accidentally touches a serpent which attacks and suffocates him. His sister, the nymph Moria, watches helplessly until the giant Damasen arrives and kills the serpent with a tree trunk. The serpent's mate then revives it using a magical herb and Moria uses the same herb to bring Tylos back to life.
