Meaning & History

Derived from the Georgian noun ცისკარი (tsiskari) meaning "sunrise, dawn, daybreak". It is a compound word that consists of Georgian ცის (tsis) meaning "of the sky" and Georgian კარი (kari) meaning "door". As such, a more literal meaning of the word would be "door of the sky" or "opening of the sky".

ცისკარა (tsiskara) is also the Georgian name for the perennial herb lovage (Levisticum officinale). Obviously, the plant's name ultimately has the same etymology as the Georgian word for "dawn".
