Meaning & History
Derived from the Greek adjective τρισμέγιστος (trismegistos) meaning "thrice-greatest", which consists of the Greek adverb τρίς (tris) meaning "thrice, three times" combined with the Greek adjective μέγιστος (megistos) meaning "biggest, largest, greatest" (see Megistos).This was an epithet of the Greek god Hermes and the Egyptian god Thoth, who were worshipped as one god by Greeks in Ptolemaic Egypt.
