Tisiphone (minor planet designation: 466 Tisiphone) is an asteroid which orbits among the Cybele family of asteroids. It was discovered by Max Wolf and Luigi Carnera on January 17, 1901, and was assigned the provisional designation 1901 FX. It was named after Tisiphone of Greek mythology.
Tisiphone is one of the Erinyes or Furies. Furies are female deities of vengeance. They each avenged different crimes. Tisiphone is the one who punished crimes of murder. She also has two sisters Alecto and Megaera who are furies, too. Cool names for triplets! That's were Tisiphone's meaning comes from.
Tisiphone is a beautiful name, and the meaning doesn't bother me at all. However, I feel like if I ever named my daughter this, everyone would call her Tiffany all the time. Yuck.

I absolutely ADORE the name Tisiphone. It is easily one of the most gorgeous names I've heard; and the meaning is a strong one. "Avenging murder" is a lovely meaning to me, for some reason. I think this name is much better than other more frequently used Greek names, like Chloe, Zoe, Daphne, and even Persephone. This name is easily one of my favorites!
