Possibly derived from Chinerfe, itself from guachinerfe, referring to the inhabitants of the island of Tenerife, located in the Canary Islands. It was borne by the last Guanche mencey (leader) of Tenerife before its division into nine menceyatos (kingdoms). He lived at the end of the 14th century.
