Meaning & History
Derived from the Greek noun θεός (theos) meaning "god" combined with the Greek noun στίχος (stichos) meaning "row". Also compare the related Greek noun στοῖχος (stoichos) meaning "row in an ascending series". Its similarity to the second element has caused some people to write the name as Theostoichos instead, which is properly latinized to Theostoechus. This was the name of one of the Nine Martyrs of Cyzicus, who died there in the 3rd century AD.
