Meaning & History
Of uncertain etymology. The name Thaoughweanjawegen was a ceremonial name given to Col. John Harper (1734-1811) by an Oneida sachem who adopted him. Harper led a corp of frontier rangers and Oneida scouts during the early years of the Revolutions New York border war. He also purchased a 230,000-ac tract of land from the Onoquaga Oneida in 1768, now part of Delaware County.
