Meaning & History

A Roman cognomen possibly from Ancient Greek ταμίας (tamíās) "steward, dispenser", from τέμνω (témnō) "to cut, hew", combined with φίλος (philos) "friend, lover". One bearer of this name was the name of a consul of the Roman Republic in 181 BC along with Publius Cornelius Cethegus.
