Meaning & History
Derived from the Greek adjective σύμμαχος (symmachos) meaning "fighting along with, leagued or allied with", which is ultimately derived from Greek σύν (syn) meaning "beside, with" combined with Greek μάχη (mache) meaning "battle, combat" (see Andromache). Also compare the Greek noun συμμαχία (symmachia) meaning "alliance" (usually a defensive and offensive one) and the Greek verb συμμαχέω (symmacheo) meaning "to be an ally, to be in alliance".
