Meaning & History
Supposedly popularised by the Venezuelan telenovela Una muchacha llamada Milagros, which first aired in September of 1973 in Venezuela and was already airing in the United States by June of 1976, the year the name and its variants entered the SSA data for the first time (there may have been rare uses of this name before 1973). In this case, it may have been inspired by the character Suky, played by Chumico Romero.
The name may be conflated with the Arabic name Suhail, referring to the second brightest star in the sky, known in the western world as Canopus, which also spawned a slight increase in usage of that name for girls, normally masculine in the Arabic world, as well as variants like Sugeil.
