Meaning & History
Derived from Greek στεφάνη (stephane) meaning "(brim of a) helmet" as well as "crown, diadem, wreath". In other words: this name is the Late Greek feminine form of Stephanos (see Stephen). In modern times, the name is often masculine: it's usually a variant of Stéphane that is used outside of France. However, it sometimes also appears as an alternate spelling of Stephanie (with the pronunciation intact, at least in the Anglophone world).
