Stan Sakai is a Japanese-American cartoonist and comic book creator. He is best known as the creator of the comic series Usagi Yojimbo. He began his career by lettering comic books and wrote and illustrated The Adventures of Nilson Groundthumper and Hermy; a comic series with a medieval setting, influenced by Sergio Aragonés' Groo the Wanderer. The characters first appeared in Albedo #1 in 1984, and were subsequently featured in issues of Critters, Grimjack, Amazing Heroes and Furrlough.
Stan is also a name historically attested in Romania and is in use today. Its origin is most probably Visigothic (old Germanic tribes who founded first states after Romans lost province Dacia to barbarians in the 3rd century AD). The name is also cognate to "stone" in English, which is also of Germanic origin. Slavic tribes migrating over the Carpathians a couple of centuries after the Visigothic invasion may have also brought Stanislav ('Stan' - to stand and 'slav' - glory). However, in Romanian, Stan is a full name, and it is unlikely that it is a shortened version of Stanislav, as Romanians don't quite shorten names this way.
Famous bearer: Stan Walker. From Will & Grace, he was supposed to be Karen Walker's (Megan Mullally) husband. Throughout the show, Stan was never seen or heard of, just talked about.
