Meaning & History
Means "subterranean" in Spanish, taken from the titles of the Virgin Mary La Virgen de la Soterraña and Nuestra Señora de la Soterraña, meaning "The Virgin of the Subterranean" and "Our Lady of the Subterranean" respectively. It refers to a statue of the Virgin Mary that was found buried underground in a cave or hill in Segovia, Spain, at the end of the 14th century. Our Lady of Soterraña is venerated at the church and monastery located in Santa María la Real de Nieva in the central northern province of Segovia, hence the name's high concentration there. She is also venerated at the basilica of San Vicente in Ávila and the church of San Miguel in Olmedo in the north-western province of Valladolid.
