The first element of this name is derived from the Lithuanian verb skirti, which usually means "to give, to devote, to dedicate" but has also been found to mean "to divide, to separate" as well as "to determine, to establish, to identify". The second element is derived from old Lithuanian gailas, which usually means "strong, potent" but has also been found to mean "sharp, jagged" as well as "angry, fierce, violent" and "miserable, sorrowful, remorseful". Also compare the modern Lithuanian noun galia meaning "power, might, force".This name was borne by a 14th-century regent of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, who was the son of Grand Duke Algirdas and his second wife Uliana of Tver.
