Meaning & History

From the name of the ancient city Sinope, derived from Hittite 𒅆𒉡𒉿 (Šinuwa) of unknown meaning. This was the name of a character from Greek mythology whom the city was supposedly named after, a daughter of Metope and Asopus, or in some accounts Ares. A moon of Jupiter was named after her.
