I am a female with the name Sholto and I live in South Africa. I absolutely love my name though most folk think I am a male before speaking to me, and of course I've had every possible spelling & pronunciation of my name. And I've had two babies named Sholto due to their parents knowing me, voila! I know that Sholto is also the first part of a double-barreled surname being Sholto-Douglas. I've met 2 men in SA with my name but no women yet.
Sholto Douglas was the putative progenitor of the Clan Douglas, and the name Sholto has been particularly associated with prominent members of the clan.

I love this name - I first heard of it in a book called "North and South" by my favorite author Elizabeth Gaskell and loved it ever since - it sounds like a really strong name for a boy - it's definitely on the list for our baby.
