I like the name Shelly, both as a full first name and a nickname, although I think I would prefer it as a full first name. I like it because it reminds me of the ocean.
Shelly is the name of Stan's sister in South Park, so as a die hard SP fan she is the first thing that comes to my mind when I hear this name. However, I love this name! Many people use it as a nickname for names like Michelle and Rochelle, but it's a great name on its own too! It reminds me of the beach!
My names is Shellyne but my nickname is Shelly. I think it’s a wonderful and unique name.

My name is Shelly. I personally believe the name is unique and light-hearted. Lots of people spell my name wrong and it makes me mad beyond belief, especially when it comes to teachers. Lots of people associate my name with turtles or the name Michelle, but boo-hoo cry me a river, I was named after the beach. Get over yourselves.
Shelly Lyn is my name and I really love it to be honest because I rarely run into another Shelly and when I do it's usually the Shelley or Shellie spelling. It's nice to have an uncommon name.
I love the name Shelly for a girl, not so much for a boy. I just never viewed the name as a masculine name ever for obvious reasons. Shelly makes a great name for a female turtle.

The name Shelly was given to 43 girls born in the US in 2015.
I think Shelly and Coral would be good names for mermaids. People say that I look like a mermaid sort of person, so I would probably have one of those names as a fantasy character.
I'm writing another comment. I think this name is better as a shortened form of Michelle. That's just my opinion. I think that you should actually name her Michelle and shorten it to Shelly or Shelley or anyway you want to spell it. That way your daughter has a choice on what she'll go by. Besides, I think Michelle is more mature anyway. Shelly is cute though.
This name looks a bit more mature with the spelling Shelley. It's a pretty name, but the ending makes it somewhat cutesy and youthful. It sounds nicer than Kelly, however, and Kelly has the same ending. It's just that it's such a common name that few pwople would say ''what a little girl name!''. So I don't see why the name should get a very negative reaction. It doesn't sound very much like the name of a professor, scientist, or president, I'll give you that, but maybe that's because of sexism.
I wouldn't name my daughter this just for the fact that a lot of kids name pet turtles or hermit crabs this. In fact this is my youngest daughter's new turtle's name. Shelly Belly is the turtles name, and for soem reason I can't associate the name with anything other than an amphibian or reptile. Although I have met one girl named Shelly.
Shelly was Shel Silverstein, the children's poet's, real name.
