Shanti Devi (1926-1987) as a child claimed to be the reincarnation of a woman named Lugdi Devi, wife of Kedar Nath. The case was brought to the attention of Mahatma Gandhi who set up a commission to investigate; a report was published in 1936.
In 1961 when my husband and I were casting about for a girl's name, our Hindu friend at college suggested the name Shanti. We liked it and especially since we were English majors and the famous poet T.S. Eliot ended his famous poem "The Wasteland" with the word Shantih. I still love the sound of the name.
Shanti can also be short for Prashanti which is derived from a similar word meaning Peace.

I spelled the name different, SHANTHI, with the th sound at the end. I was told that the meaning is the same as Shanti, but I like the way Shanthi sounds better that Shanti. It's my mother in law's name.
