Shankaroon Axmed Sagal is a popular Somali singer and the inspiration for many of poet Maxamed Cali Kaariye works. Kaariye was infatuated with her, but she didn't feel the same way about him. In 1972, the two were set to marry, but Shankaroon left him to marry somebody else in Saudi Arabia. Having loved her so much, Kaariye wrote numerous poems about her.In the golden age of Somali music from the 60s to the 80s, she was one of most prominent Somali singers.

Shankaroon was one of the names originally suggested for the Republic of Somaliland. The name was suggested to reference the 5 Regions of Greater Somalia.
