A lovely name with a lovely meaning. However, especially if you’re not of Arabic descent or living in an Arabic speaking country (or if you pronounce the name with the emphasis on the second syllable) I think it’s not well-suited for a child. No doubt there would be many jokes about hips not lying or waka waka.
This name is beautiful. Shakira is literally my idol.
What I have never understood about all these unique names is how the parents, unless famous themselves, actually picked out such a unique name for their child, without knowing that 'she' (since I don't know of any male celebs with a unique full name), will be famous in the future. It's all very well to say that anyone considering this type of name is just trying to be different, and doesn't necessarily have to be a fan of Shakira or whoever, but it still makes you wonder.
Seriously what about Elvis, Usher and Prince especially?! It's quite ignorant as usual to say that only females have unique names.
Don't forget Lebron, the basketball player, Plato and Aristotle, The philosophers, Drake, the disgraced Rapper, Kanye, and Psy, the Korean singer.
It's worth noting that non Arabians usually extend the wrong vowels. If this name is really from Arabic "شاكرة", it would be pronounced like "Shaa-kira", meaning the first "a" is long while the "i" is short.
My hips don't lie.
Shakira is a Colombian singer, songwriter, dancer, and record producer. Born and raised in Barranquilla, she began performing in school, demonstrating Latin American, Arabic, and rock and roll influences and belly dancing abilities. Shakira's first studio albums, Magia and Peligro, failed to attain commercial success in the 1990s; however, she rose to prominence in Latin America with her major-label debut, Pies Descalzos (1996), and her fourth album, Dónde Están los Ladrones? (1998). Shakira entered the English-language market with her fifth album, Laundry Service. Its lead single, "Whenever, Wherever", became the best-selling single of 2002. Her success was solidified with her sixth and seventh albums Fijación Oral, Vol. 1 and Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 (2005), the latter of which spawned one of the best-selling songs of the 21st century, "Hips Don't Lie". Shakira's eighth and ninth albums, She Wolf (2009) and Sale el Sol (2010), received critical praise. Her official song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)", became the biggest-selling World Cup song of all time. With over 1.3 billion views, it is one of the most-watched music videos on YouTube. Shakira served as a coach on the fourth and sixth seasons of the American version of The Voice in 2013 and 2014, respectively. Her tenth album, Shakira (2014), is preceded by its lead single, "Can't Remember to Forget You". Shakira has won many awards, including five MTV Video Music Awards, two Grammy Awards, eight Latin Grammy Awards, seven Billboard Music Awards, 28 Billboard Latin Music Awards and has been Golden Globe-nominated. She has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and has sold between 70 and 125 million records worldwide (depending on the source), making her one of the best selling Latin artists of all time. She carries out well-known philanthropic activities through charity work most notably through her Pies Descalzos Foundation. In 2014, she was listed as the 58th most powerful woman in the world by Forbes.

Beautiful name with beautiful meaning (I prefer it as Shakura though). It's female form of one of Allah's name Al-Shakur, the One who is thankful for even the smallest deed by rewarding it. It's a personification of really beautiful aspect of Universe. [noted -ed]

I like this name, and I also like Shakira's music. I don't find it tacky or trashy at all. However, I think this name would look kind of strange on someone not of Middle Eastern descent. No offense.
I have to disagree with the comment made about the name "Shakira" being tacky. Shakira is a beautiful, wholesome name. I have never heard about the singer named "Shakira", however, yes, most of the women I've met and heard about who bear this name are of Middle East descent, though this is dramatically changing. I must add that all the women I've met with this name are all incredibly beautiful!
Sorry, but this name sounds very tacky. Names like this sound very foreign on American (as well as Canadian, British, and Australian) people that don't have any South American heritage. The name reminds me of no other person than the singer Shakira, and I dislike her voice and music very much. Everyone would assume you named your daughter after her, even if you just liked the name, not the singer, and that seems tacky. Kira sounds cool, though, just like Kiera/Keira, so you might consider using that instead.
I think this might mean 'beautiful killer' in Japanese.
