Hideous name, this is a really common name in the Latino community, it's nothing great or marvelous. It sounds like a disease, Serena on the other hand is a truly beautiful name and the pronunciation is better and more smoother.
This is not a common name which adds a certain charm along with it's meaning for moon goddess.

I like the meaning of this name, just not the pop cultural associations.

I honestly hate it when I'm called Selena Gomez.

My name is Selena and I grew up absolutely HATING it because everyone would call me Selena Gomez and I did not like it. At least that was only until I learned what it meant.
Selena and Celina are both beautiful. I love the name so much. I don't think I could choose one over the other. I might just use both names on future daughters one day. One for a first name and the other for a middle name. Selena-moon/moon goddess. Celina-moon goddess/heaven.

I love this name, but unfortunately when young people hear this name they may associate it with Selena Gomez. I prefer the Selana Quintanilla (r.i.p.) association. I also think it has a beautiful meaning with a note of mystique.
I came across this website and just happened to lookup my name. I saw all the comments about it and relating it to the actress Gomez and the Latino singer, who unfortunately, was tragically killed at such a young age. Anyway, my name is Selena and I have been having it for 53 yrs, way before them. I love my name, it is unique, and I love its Greek origin and meaning which means moon. It is has an expression meaning of - a countenance like the sun. Personality meaning of - has a good dash of originality. Natural meaning of - is gentle and loving. Emotional meaning of - someone with love-filled eyes. Character meaning of - a defender of truth and right. Physical meaning of - a smile that lights up everyone's world. A mental meaning of - is idealistic and imaginative in nature. And finally a motivation meaning of - virtue, etiquette, good behavior. I love what my name means and majority of it is so applicable to how I am, still trying to get that etiquette part. I believe you establish your child's destiny by their name so know what a name means before naming your child. I named my daughter Cherish which means love and Iesha which means life. Both are blessing me by living up to their name, Cherish loving people, seeing no enemy and Iesha living life to the fullest, hiking mountains and enjoying what life has to offer. Thanks for reading, just had to stand up for my name.Meanings provided by 1991 Names & Faces; The Perfect Gift; 517 Ocean Front Walk Venice Beach, CA 90291.
Selena is such a pretty name. It's soft and feminine without being too frilly and it ages well. There aren't a lot of Selena's around at all.

When I was growing up I knew a few Celina's but they were all hispanic and spelled it CELINA (with the 'C'), not Selena. I even had a teacher named Celina and she was an older lady in her 60's. It was like the names Cecilia, Celeste, Celina... I always thought of it with a 'C'. After the singer died, though, it just boomed and everyone wanted to spell it like her. The 'S' spelling is pretty much all I ever see now. Amazing how this name just skyrocketed in the latino community after Selena Quintanilla's death (and she was a year younger than me, so we were of the same generation). The name is very pretty and I like it but I'm not a big fan of Selena Gomez and unfortunately, I think the name is so closely associated with her too. Pretty ironic how Selena Gomez (a native Texan herself) has said on TV that she was named after Selena the singer. It's a 'singer' name to me.. lol I like the 'moon' meaning and like all spellings of it: SELENA/SELINA/CELINA.

This name is so cute but I hate Selena Gomez so I would probably use Selene instead. Same nicknames though of Sel, Selly, Lena and Leni.
I don't like the name Selena, I just don't feel comfortable with any pronunciation I can think of and it sounds broken. But ever since I saw the movie "Arthur and the Invisibles" I have always loved the name Selenia. I sounds more feminine and has a nice flow to it. I pronounce it Suh-Le-Nee-Ah. The "Uh" in "Suh" is very short and "Le" as in "Let". It makes me think of a bright flower instead of a moon though.
I like this name and not because of Selena Gomez. I liked it before she became a star and I always will. I just can't imagine it on a elderly lady! LOL.

Not only does Selena Gomez annoy me very, very much, but how people describe this name is just corny. It sounds sort of ditzy too. I MUCH prefer Selene.
I used to love this name before Selena Gomez came around! I still like it, and might use it some day. But Gomez is a bad impression of this lovely name.

I have a friend who bears this name, I like it very much, it doesn't sound too frilly and it doesn't sound too boyish.
I imagine this name for a Hispanic girl with medium skin, black hair and dark brown eyes. No offense, but I can not see this name on a white girl. Some names just don't match with certain races.
This is my name. I've had several people comment about how beautiful my name is. The only negative I've had with it is people calling me "Serena" or "Sabrina".

I am so attracted to this name. I know I will name my daughter Selena. I imagine her with medium skin, black hair and dark brown eyes.
I'm not sure I had heard of this name before I became familiar with Selena Quintanilla Pérez. Besides the fact that I adore the deceased singer, I think the name is beautiful. It just sort of rolls of the tongue, doesn't it? I think it actually sounds better than the name Selene.
