This is my daughter's name. Why is there nothing included regarding Selene, the goddess of the moon?"In ancient Greek mythology and religion, Selene (/sɪˈliːniː/; Greek: Σελήνη pronounced [selɛ̌ːnɛː], meaning "Moon"[2]) is the personification of the Moon. Also known as Mene, she is traditionally the daughter of the Titans Hyperion and Theia, and sister of the sun god Helios and the dawn goddess Eos. She drives her moon chariot across the heavens. Several lovers are attributed to her in various myths, including Zeus, Pan, and the mortal Endymion. In post-classical times, Selene was often identified with Artemis, much as her brother, Helios, was identified with Apollo.[3] Selene and Artemis were also associated with Hecate and all three were regarded as moon and lunar goddesses, but only Selene was regarded as the personification of the Moon itself. Her Roman equivalent is Luna.[4]"Full article here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selene
It should also be added that this name is also popularized by American singer and Actress Selena Gomez who was named after the Mexican-American singer. I would add it myself but I don't know how. [noted -ed]
Gorgeous, you could name your daughter after the stars, Selena Quintanilla and Selena Gomez.

Beautiful name for any baby girls whom can be named after the beautiful, kind, amazing and humble Tejano Tex Mex singer named Selena Quintanilla Perez... whom was like Elvis Presley of Latin Music...Selena Quintanilla-Pérez (April 16, 1971 – March 31, 1995) was an American singer, songwriter, spokesperson, businesswoman, model, actress, and fashion designer. Referred to as the "Queen of Tejano music", her contributions to music and fashion made her one of the most celebrated Mexican-American entertainers of the late 20th century. Billboard magazine named her the top-selling Latin artist of the 1990s decade, while her posthumous collaboration with MAC cosmetics became the best-selling celebrity collection in cosmetics history. 2 Media outlets called her the "Tejano Madonna" for her clothing choices. She also ranks among the most influential Latin artists of all time and is credited for catapulting a music genre into the mainstream market. She signed with EMI Latin in 1989 and released her self-titled debut album the same year, while her brother became her principal music producer and songwriter. Selena was shot and killed on March 31, 1995, 16 days before her 24th birthday, by Yolanda Saldívar, her friend and the former manager of her Selena Etc. Boutiques. Two weeks later, Texas Governor (and future US President) George W. Bush declared Selena's birthday Selena Day in Texas.
Hideous name, this is a really common name in the Latino community, it's nothing great or marvelous. It sounds like a disease, Serena on the other hand is a truly beautiful name and the pronunciation is better and more smoother.
This is not a common name which adds a certain charm along with it's meaning for moon goddess.

I like the meaning of this name, just not the pop cultural associations.

My name is Selena and I grew up absolutely HATING it because everyone would call me Selena Gomez and I did not like it. At least that was only until I learned what it meant.
Selena and Celina are two completely different names. Selena is derived from Ancient Greek and it means moon. However, Celina is derived from Latin and it means celestial or heavenly.

Selena and Celina are both beautiful. I love the name so much. I don't think I could choose one over the other. I might just use both names on future daughters one day. One for a first name and the other for a middle name. Selena-moon/moon goddess. Celina-moon goddess/heaven.

I love this name, but unfortunately when young people hear this name they may associate it with Selena Gomez. I prefer the Selana Quintanilla (r.i.p.) association. I also think it has a beautiful meaning with a note of mystique.
Selena Quintanilla was a beautiful woman inside and out, not to mention a beautiful singer. I would love to name my daughter Selena after a strong woman who will be missed forever and always, at least by me.
I came across this website and just happened to lookup my name. I saw all the comments about it and relating it to the actress Gomez and the Latino singer, who unfortunately, was tragically killed at such a young age. Anyway, my name is Selena and I have been having it for 53 yrs, way before them. I love my name, it is unique, and I love its Greek origin and meaning which means moon. It is has an expression meaning of - a countenance like the sun. Personality meaning of - has a good dash of originality. Natural meaning of - is gentle and loving. Emotional meaning of - someone with love-filled eyes. Character meaning of - a defender of truth and right. Physical meaning of - a smile that lights up everyone's world. A mental meaning of - is idealistic and imaginative in nature. And finally a motivation meaning of - virtue, etiquette, good behavior. I love what my name means and majority of it is so applicable to how I am, still trying to get that etiquette part. I believe you establish your child's destiny by their name so know what a name means before naming your child. I named my daughter Cherish which means love and Iesha which means life. Both are blessing me by living up to their name, Cherish loving people, seeing no enemy and Iesha living life to the fullest, hiking mountains and enjoying what life has to offer. Thanks for reading, just had to stand up for my name.Meanings provided by 1991 Names & Faces; The Perfect Gift; 517 Ocean Front Walk Venice Beach, CA 90291.
Selena is such a pretty name. It's soft and feminine without being too frilly and it ages well. There aren't a lot of Selena's around at all.

This name reminds me of the beautiful Selena Quintanilla- Perez. It's a beautiful name but I wouldn't name my daughter Selena. So much hate towards Selena Gomez for no apparent reason. I guess jealous people tend to hate on others... It's sad because I'm sure no one here knows her personally. Grow up!

My best friend, who isn't Spanish but is Australian, with blonde hair and blue eyes is called Selena (pronounced Se-LEE-na). She is not at all like the American singer/actress Selena Gomez.. she's quite a bossy-boots and has a domineering presence, not very Disney-like haha, but she is a great listener and has your back. The only thing she has in common with Gomez is that she is also very pretty. Apparently it means moon. Similar name to Selena is Celeste which also means moon.

When I was growing up I knew a few Celina's but they were all hispanic and spelled it CELINA (with the 'C'), not Selena. I even had a teacher named Celina and she was an older lady in her 60's. It was like the names Cecilia, Celeste, Celina... I always thought of it with a 'C'. After the singer died, though, it just boomed and everyone wanted to spell it like her. The 'S' spelling is pretty much all I ever see now. Amazing how this name just skyrocketed in the latino community after Selena Quintanilla's death (and she was a year younger than me, so we were of the same generation). The name is very pretty and I like it but I'm not a big fan of Selena Gomez and unfortunately, I think the name is so closely associated with her too. Pretty ironic how Selena Gomez (a native Texan herself) has said on TV that she was named after Selena the singer. It's a 'singer' name to me.. lol I like the 'moon' meaning and like all spellings of it: SELENA/SELINA/CELINA.

This name is so cute but I hate Selena Gomez so I would probably use Selene instead. Same nicknames though of Sel, Selly, Lena and Leni.
I don't like the name Selena, I just don't feel comfortable with any pronunciation I can think of and it sounds broken. But ever since I saw the movie "Arthur and the Invisibles" I have always loved the name Selenia. I sounds more feminine and has a nice flow to it. I pronounce it Suh-Le-Nee-Ah. The "Uh" in "Suh" is very short and "Le" as in "Let". It makes me think of a bright flower instead of a moon though.
This is my name, it is Greek not Spanish or Russian. I know a lot of people think of it as a Mexican name because of the famous Tejano singer, but it's not. If anything, it was odd for her to have a first name that was not Spanish or Mexican.
I have a Mexican friend who is named Selena and she pronounces it as: sel-AY-nah.

I like this name and not because of Selena Gomez. I liked it before she became a star and I always will. I just can't imagine it on a elderly lady! LOL.

Not only does Selena Gomez annoy me very, very much, but how people describe this name is just corny. It sounds sort of ditzy too. I MUCH prefer Selene.
I used to love this name before Selena Gomez came around! I still like it, and might use it some day. But Gomez is a bad impression of this lovely name.

I have a friend who bears this name, I like it very much, it doesn't sound too frilly and it doesn't sound too boyish.
I imagine this name for a Hispanic girl with medium skin, black hair and dark brown eyes. No offense, but I can not see this name on a white girl. Some names just don't match with certain races.
Selena Gomez plays Mikayla, Hannah's rival singer on Hannah Montana, Alex on Wizards Of Waverly Place and played Gwen on the Suite Life of Zack and Cody.

This is my name. I've had several people comment about how beautiful my name is. The only negative I've had with it is people calling me "Serena" or "Sabrina".

Selena Donovan was a character in Casualty played by Elizabeth Carling.
I think that Selena is a beautiful name, the way it just sort of glides off your tongue se-le-na.

Selena appeared on the top 1000 list from the 1890's to the 1900's. It came back on the top 1000 list in the 1960's. Its most popular year was the 1990's where it ranked 197.

Selena is a gorgeous name. I know of a few people with this name and they all pronounce it se-LEE-nuh. That is how I would pronounce it too.

This name is pronounced se-LAY-nuh, or se-LEH-nuh, *not* se-LEE-nuh! That is, if you are refering to anyone who speaks Spanish and bears this name.

I'm not sure I had heard of this name before I became familiar with Selena Quintanilla Pérez. Besides the fact that I adore the deceased singer, I think the name is beautiful. It just sort of rolls of the tongue, doesn't it? I think it actually sounds better than the name Selene.
Take a look at the popularity chart for this name. Starting in 1991, its popularity started rising annually; that's the year that the career of the immensely popular singer Selena really took off. In 1995, the year of her untimely death, it shot up to #91 on the Top 1000 list, compared to #300 the year before. Coincidence? I think not.
One of the most famous bearers of this name in our modern times was the beautiful "Reina de Cumbia", Selena Quintanilla Perez (1971-1995). An enormously popular singer in Latino communities across North America, her music crossed cultural boundaries to touch the lives of young and old alike. In life she was hailed as the Latin Whitney or Mariah and her death was then likened to that of John Lennon. ¡Vive para siempre la Reina de Cumbia!*Pronounced: Seh-LEE-nuh*
