I'm really glad to find my name here (I'm named Luke Sebastian -- originally, Lucas Sebastião). Sadly, in nowadays' Brazil the trend is to use meaningless pseudo-English name, generally made up of a corrupt form of different names; in response to this trend, names like Sebastian (Sebastião), John (João), Joseph (José), Mary (Maria), Clotilde (Clotilde) and Lysander (Lysandro) are considered old-fashioned and associated with the countryside in their native forms, although in foreign variants they're still accepted. It's ironic that a name whose meaning is "venerable" is considered rude and brutal; this is a sad consequence of the current anthroponymic ignorance here in Brazil.

Anyway, my nicknames are Tião (mainly) and Bastião (intermittently); nobody never called me Batião, as another one said above.

I knew a man from Brazil with this name. The usual nickname seems to be "Batião."
