This is my daughter's middle name. When we were searching for names for her, I came across an alternate meaning for Severine, which is "of the Severn." This is perfect, as my daughter was born in Wales, very close to the River Severn. Such a beautiful and uncommon name. For those of you who balk at the "severe" designation, maybe you'll like the river connection.
That etymology of Severine would connect it to the name Sabrina, the Latinized form of Habren (the original Welsh name for the river).

The word "sévère" means "severe" or "strict" in French. I can't imagine this name would be that common in France, because of association with the word.

"Severine" (without accent marks) is a song by the Gothic/Electronica band Ego Likeness. I love the song, don't like the name.
I really like this name. It's melodious, to be poetic about it. It just sounds nice, and if I wasn't afraid that nearly everyone she ran into would butcher it beyond belief (since I'm American and most Americans don't speak French), I would name a daughter this. It has potential as a middle name, though.
