Meaning & History
Derived from the French noun sémaphore meaning "semaphore", which is a visual signalling system. The word is ultimately derived from the ancient Greek words σῆμα (sema) meaning "sign, mark, token" and φέρω (phero) meaning "to bear, to carry". As such, the original meaning of the word is roughly "the sign-bearer".In French literature, Sémaphore is the name of the owner of the corpulent talking dog Cubitus, who is the main character of the Franco-Belgian comic Cubitus, which was created in 1968 by the Belgian/Walloon cartoonist Dupa (1945-2000). In the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium, namely Flanders, Sémaphore is known as Semafoor.
