Latinized form of Greek Σκέλμις (Skelmis). In Greek mythology this was the name of one of the Telchines, sea spirits (daemons) native to the island of Rhodes, who were killed by the gods when they turned to evil magic. According to Hesiod, Scelmis was one of the Dactyls or Daktyloi, more commonly known as Celmis.
