Roman cognomen which was derived from the Latin adjective scaurus meaning "with swollen ankles, club-footed." The word is ultimately derived from Greek σκαῦρος (skauros) meaning "lame", which is etymologically related to Sanskrit khora "lame". A bearer of this name was Marcus Aemilius Scaurus, a Roman consul from the 2nd century BC.
