Meaning & History
Derived from Greek σάρδιον (sardion), which is the name that the ancient Greeks had for carnelian, a precious stone. It is not completely certain what the ancient Greeks had derived the name from. Some sources (including Pliny the Elder) claim that the precious stone was named after the city of Sardis in Lydia, as allegedly the stone was first found there. Other sources claim that the stone's name was ultimately derived from the Persian word سرد (sered) meaning "yellowish-red". Either way, the ancient Greeks did not use Sardion as a first name - as far as I know, the use of Sardion as a first name is limited to Georgia only.
