Meaning & History
Hellenized form of Shamuna, which is a name that is likely to be of Semitic origin (e.g. Arabic, Aramaic or Hebrew). Its meaning is as of yet uncertain. The first notable bearer of this name was the Syrian saint Samonas of Edessa (died in 305 AD), who was also known under the name Shamuna. Several centuries later, Samonas was also the name of an influential Byzantine official and eunuch, who was of Arab origin and born around 875 in Melitene (now Malatya in eastern Turkey).
