The most likely possibility is that the first element is derived from Old High German salo "black." Other possibilities are sal "house, living room" and Gothic sêls "kind, friendly." The second element is derived from Gothic bairgan (bergan in Old High German) "to keep, to save, to preserve", or from Old High German burg "fortress." Salaberga was the name of a 7th-century saint.
