Sable is the name of the lady's maid (or 9th Century equivalent) to Aethelflaed (Æthelflæd), Lady of Mercia, on the TV show "The Last Kingdom."Her name in the show, however, is pronounced "SAH-buhl." In this context it is most likely an Old English variant of Isabel (ultimately derived from biblical Elizabeth) rather than a reference to the animal.
The appearance of Sable on the US name popularity statistics for 1986 is most likely due to Sabella "Sable" Colby, a character from the popular American television series "Dynasty" (1981-1989) and its spin-off "The Colbys" (1985-1987).Sable Colby first appeared on "Dynasty" in November 1985. Later that same month, the character became a regular on "The Colbys", which she continued to be until the end of the series in 1987. After that, she reappeared in the final season of "Dynasty" from 1988 to 1989.Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sable_Colby (in English)
Sable Starr (born Sable Hay Shields, August 15, 1957 – April 18, 2009) was a famous American groupie, romantically linked with punk trailblazers Iggy Pop, Richard Hell, and (long-term) Johnny Thunders.

I like it, but not as an official first name. It would be the best nickname for Isabel, though.
I've always thought this was a beautiful name. There is a small island of the coast of Nova Scotia (Canada), called Sable Island, where the wild horses roam.

My sister's name is Sable. It's pronounced SAY-bl. And we do joke about her name, but I think it's beautiful. When she was younger we used to say 'Sable, are you able to watch cable while you're sitting at the table?' We still joke about it from time to time.
Sable Colby was a character in the 80s soap 'Dynasty'. Her name was short for Sabella.

It's a name that rhymes with 'table' and 'able', and also 'cable', now that I think about it. And 'fable'. Could lead to bad jokes and poems and songs to make fun of a girl named this. But it's not like anyone would use this old-fashioned name anymore.
What a fascinating female name. I was under the impression it was male (I believe the novel Good Omens has a male character named Sable), but I just encountered a girl with this name today. One of the female but not conventionally effeminate names out there. I might not use it as a first name, but as a middle name it'd be good.
