It's a great name. It could fit a young child well, and I don't think it sounds "redneck" or "hillbilly". A hillbilly name would be something like Cletus.
Love this name! The nickname "Rusty" is so fun-- reminds me of Andy from Toy Story complete with Western vibes. "Russ" is more modern in my opinion, ala Ross from friends.Namesakes that come to mind are Russell Brand (Actor/Comedian), Russell Westbrook (NBA), and the words "rustle" and "wrestle".
I absolutely love this name a lot. It's really simple but also distinct like it's not a name you would get mixed up with anything else. If I were a guy, I would definitely call myself Russell!
I like the name Russell. Not so much that I would use it for a kid, but I certainly do. I don't know any Russells personally and don't associate the name with any specific person but for whatever reason it makes me think of someone who is handsome in a rather classic way, very charming personality-wise and knows full of well of his advantages, which he likes to use for flirting with women and making them fall head over heels for him. Despite the name's meaning, it makes me think of someone with black hair rather than red. Here in Poland I guess it could potentially be a little problematic because I've heard from several people that the normal English pronunciation (typically Poles would pronounce it more like RAH-sel) makes them think of the Polish word "rosół" which means chicken soup. It's certainly not my first or even second association with this name, but having heard it from several people already, now it does sound a bit like that to me too.
My husband is named Russell. I have always loved his name. He is insanely strong with high stamina. Large blue green eyes, soft lips and thick wavy brunette hair. Most charismatic man I know too. I call him Russ for short too sometimes and to the people making fun, we actually call our daughter Russellsprout. It is adorable! So yeah.
This is my brother's name. He was going to be named Raphael (or Rafael), but my friend in kindergarten already was going to name their brother Raphael or Rafael, so my parents ended up with Russell instead. Overall, I don't like it very much, but maybe that's just my opinion.
This is my mentor's name, and despite the constant criticism I receive from my family I really want to name my first son this. I can't find the word to describe the feeling that overcomes me when I say it, it just rolls off of my tongue so nicely. However, I will state that if you name your child this you should be cautious about what middle name you pick. For example, my mentor's name is Rusty John which immediately makes me think of a dirty toilet. I personally took a liking to the name when my priest mentioned Saint Russell Anthony in his sermon.
I really like this name. It's also one of those last names than can work just as well as a first name, like Mitchell. I might consider using it one day.

This WAS a name that I liked, but now it reminds me of the scumbag Russell Brand with his creepy psychopathic eyes. Excuse me, I need to take a shower after thinking about that freak...

Always makes me think of russet potatoes or brussel sprouts. Could definitely see this name on a farmer.

For everyone saying this can be a feminine name, it can. Sometimes you would have to give Russell (F) a girly middle name, for example your mom's first name, to help her insure that she’s not a boy! But I still think this is an interesting choice. I would go with Russell Elizabeth, Russell Marie, Russell Lynn, Russell Olivia, Russell Amelia, Russell Charlotte, Russell Julia, Russell Alexandra, Russell Tiana, Russell Alina, or something very elegant for a girl!

It's russet potatoes, not Russell. This name isn't that bad. I wouldn't give it to one of my kids, but I wouldn't mind hearing it more.

Love the name! It sounds really sexy yet mature. :)
It's not the worst name out there by any stretch of the imagination, but I despise Russell Crowe, and he has ruined this otherwise perfectly nice name for me.
Sorry, but, it feels like this name is a becoming a victim of the "redneck" stereotype propagated by popular entertainment. It just reminds me of a name used in one-liners by Jeff Foxworthy.
I really love this name! I think it sounds kind of modern even though it's not. Russ sounds really great. I hate that the popularity is decreasing :( it doesn't sound old or stuffy at all!(funny thing: in French "rousse elle" means red-headed girl and I heard Roussell was a variant of Russell. Still love the name though)
