I LOVE the meaning, and the pronunciation is BEAUTIFUL! But I dislike the spelling (I'm sure it's great in the Arabic culture but not in English) so if I were to anglicize it, I'd turn it into - Rukayah.
Ruqayyah Boyer (Arab رقية born April 28, 1991) is a Surinamese-Guyanese actress, singer/songwriter/rapper and former beauty pageant titleholder. She is also a graduate of the Institute of creative arts (Theatre arts, Drama and Music).
The East African (Somali, Ethiopian, Djiboutian, Eritrean) version of this name tends to use an "i" for the middle vowel. I have seen this name spelled in many different ways for Somali girls in my region: Ruqiyyah; Rukya; Rhukkiya; Rukiyah; Rhukiya; Ruqqiya; Ruqiyya; Ruqiya; Ruqqyya; Rukia; Rukiah; and Rhukia. I have seen all of these used since Arabic and Arabic-based alphabets exclude so many sounds in the spelling of words that Latinizations can vary wildly.
