I adore this name. If I have a daughter someday I hope to name her Ruby Eloise. It has the most beautiful vintage flair and I like that it'll be unique to her.

To all the haters out here, I'm just going to be completely honest: you *probably* despise your own name. It doesn't matter if you're a boy named Ashley, or if your name comes from a culture that is not your own, or anything. Never be afraid to say your name, because it is a beautiful name, and so are you.
I might put Ruby in the "Alice, Clara, Lucy, Rose" family - very sweet, sort of Gothic, vintage names. It's pretty cool.

Gosh, I love gemstones and jewelry in general, so Ruby would be a very fitting name for me hehe. It's got this "tragic goth" undertone I love, thanks to Ruby Gloom. I think the only downside to Ruby, in my opinion, is that it sounds a bit harsh compared to a name with a similar sound like Lucy. Lucy is very soft while Ruby isn't that soft. But it's sweet and pretty nonetheless. It reminds me of scarlet rubies, of course. Very cute!

The way my family just loves this name, I can tell this was close to being my name. It’s simple to say, it’s cute AND if you are having a baby girl in July, then this would be a great option! July’s birth stone is the Ruby so you can’t go wrong. ❤️❤️.
My kitten’s name is Ruby, short for Rhubarb due to her ginger colouring. I personally really like this name for people too, there’s a girl at my school named Ruby and she’s really pretty; she has lovely green eyes and blonde hair. She’s nice as well, which certainly helps with my impression. I’ve known other Rubys in the past before as well, all of which were also nice :)I would recommend this name for a child! It’s a nice name to go through life with. It’s short, so most people will understand how to say and spell it, and it’s not terribly informal so it can age well.
The name is not an old lady name. Or cat lady. My name is Ruby and 1. I am not an old lady and 2. I hate cats. It's ok to see things this way but be more creative.
My name is Ruby and I love it. I've only met one other Ruby in my life and she was 2 years younger than me. My aunt always wanted a daughter named Ruby but was done having children. My mom named me Ruby for this (:
I think Ruby is a very gorgeous name. It's graced with beautiful elegance, femininity and class. It has a nice vintage charm about it but still sounds modern. It's not very common but it's not unheard of either. Also, in many cultures, rubies are extremely valuable; priceless, in-fact, and I think that makes the name even more beautiful. Also, the Ruby is my second favorite gemstone, behind only the majestic amethyst. I've always loved gemstones; in-fact, I have a really large collection of them. I adore gemstone-inspired names because gemstones are very beautiful, sparkling and radiant, yet they're also very strong, solid and unbreakable, and I think that's beautifully symbolic of a woman: Women are gorgeous, shining and radiant, yet they're also unwaveringly strong, solid and unbreakable. That's why I love gemstone names.
I used to despise the name Ruby, but somehow, now, I LOVE IT SO MUCH YOU CAN'T EVEN BELIEVE IT-If you're looking for a combo, may I suggest Ruby Lou or Alison Ruby?
My name is Ruby Diane and at 38 I still love my name. It’s been rare in my life to meet another Ruby, but now have two friends who named their baby Ruby. I think I’m confident, fun, sassy...everything a Ruby should be. I am a successful business owner, and in great shape physically, and I’m not sure anyone who’s met me would consider this an old lady or cat lady name. I get a lot of compliments on my name. My nicknames have been Rube, Rubesters, Ru, but mostly I am simply called by my actual name. I’ve never had someone make fun of my name even as a child. 10/10...highly recommend.
I LOVE this name! My birthstone is a Ruby. I wish my name was Ruby. If I wasn't so attached to the name I have, I would change it in a heartbeat. I'd like to give it to a daughter someday, it's wonderful!

I love this name! So much personal meaning for me... If I ever have a daughter her name will be Ruby Jean.
Thank you all about all these nice comments regarding my and other's names! You are all beautiful people and you shine as bright as the sun and no one can change that! Live on, the name Ruby! Live on! And live on all you beautiful people, Anna, Jacob, Riley etc. Be yourself!
I would like this name if it weren't for the song, "Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town" written by Mel Tillis and recorded by numerous people about a wife who habitually cheats on her disabled veteran husband. I can't get over the negative association.
My youngest sister is named Ruby, and it's my favorite name out of mine and all of my sister's names. I feel like it has somewhat of a classic-ness to it, like it's going to pop up throughout the years but also has a bit of quirkiness and uniqueness to it. If my sister weren't named this, I would probably consider it for a future daughter.
It's pretty, but I find it a little plain on its own. I once met a girl called Ruby-Dawn, and I just thought that was a surprisingly beautiful combination. So, I'd recommend pairing this name with something else, to make it sound less plain and more ear-catching. I also associate this name with Ruby Rose, and well.... she's just plain gorgeous, ha ha.
This is my name, and although I've often been known as "Buby", it suits me well.

Love this name so much I feel like I'm actually attached to it. You can blame Alexandra Bracken's The Darkest Minds for that. Recently decided to name my classical guitar this, and it's so fitting.
I love the name Ruby! I think it's short, sweet name that you don't hear very often. I think it matures well as well. I think Roo would be a sweet, cutesty nickname for Ruby.

I would like it if if didn't remind me so much of the Hispanic male name Ruben.
My name is Ruby. When I was born, there weren't many at all, and it was a very uncommon name! People thought it was a very strange choice. Now, almost 15 years later, there are quite a few Rubys in the UK, but I'm yet to meet one around my own age; they're mostly below 10. I actually really like my name. I didn't when I was younger, but it has good connotations, such as the song "Ruby Tuesday", and a lot of people say "Cool name!". I tend to get "Ru", "Bee" or "Boo".
I first heard this name in a British book. The name has stuck with me ever since. Ruby is a gem, a classic name and very feminine without sounding bratty or snobbish. I would definitely name a girl this.
I always thought about one day giving Ruby for my daughter's first or middle name. I think it's pretty yet simple. I don't know why some say that it's overused because I have NEVER met a Ruby. My grandpa loved the gem and so it's dear to me.
I used to love this name, and when I was pregnant with my son it was a name I considered for him before I knew he was a him. Then one day I met a Ruby in real life and she is a wholly unpleasant person with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Don't you hate when that happens?
It reminds me of a cute little girl with blonde curly hair.

We are blessed to be having a baby very soon. Her middle name will be Ruby for my paternal great-grandma. I never had the chance to meet her but the stories of her give me a very good impression. We really considered using Ruby as her first name because we like it so!

A very pretty meaning, but the name itself doesn't sound very good; perhaps it's the final "bee" sound that takes away the appeal. I can't picture it on anyone who doesn't have reddish hair, and it sounds rather immature, as well.
A hideous name. Crazy cat-lady... a woman who collects owl statues and dolls-- that's a lot of creep.Choose a name with class, elegance. A name that will aid your child later in life. A doctor? Lawyer? Successful? No. Even if it is achieved... the name holds back.As much as I hate this: Rubena is Esperanto for "Like A Ruby," if you must... gag.Where are these ghastly nature name trends coming from!? Yes, rubies are a stone... ergo, "nature." It is like naming a child "Spring."

This name is in no way part of a trend, to the person who said it was part of a "nature trend"... The name Ruby has been used for centuries, and in fact was a lot more popular about 100 years ago than it is now. It's plenty professional, especially since if you named your daughter Ruby now she'd probably be in competition for a job with a bunch of jaydens, kaydens, kaylees and kylies. This name certainly does have history and is not at all trendy, despite it rising in popularity. There have been tens of thousands of women named Ruby and I'm sure plenty of them have been successful. If you want to bash a name, go bash one that deserves it. Anyways... I think this name is adorable, i'd say by all means use it if you like it. Although it is becoming increasingly popular in Australia ad the UK.

Ruby is my great grandmother's name on my dad's side. If we have another daughter, Ruby is one of my top choices for her. I used to think the name was nice, but it just keeps growing on me more and more. I usually like longer names with nicknames, but Ruby is graceful, sweet and rich without needing to be long. It sounds lovely with multiple different middle names too - bonus!
I really like this name; it's so versatile and usable in general. It would suit anybody of any age or personality this name also has the fairly rare attribute of being able to suit a baby or young girl, i.e. to sound girly, young and fresh, but also as the child grows older, to morph into a more responsible, respectable name. I believe that this quality is rare in a name, as more often than not, names can sound either too young or too old, depending on the person's age, but the name Ruby fits all ages perfectly. :)
I loved (and still love) jewel names when I was a kid, but this was my absolute favorite. I loved the way it sounded, and I thought the jewel itself was beautiful. I used to draw a kind of series when I was a kid, and one of the characters was named Ruby. :)
This was my my maternal great-grandmother's name. Her name was Ruby Lee, which was apparently a fairly popular combination when she was born. I think the name is sweet and pretty and brings to mind someone who is generous and kind but also strong and determined.
A classic scullery maid's name turned hipsterish for the 2000's. I suppose there is nothing wrong with that but for those who find it stylish and classic it was more an 'aspirational' name for poor working class Victorians than anything else at the turn of the century. You wouldn't have found it much amongst the 'snooty' rich.Irrespective of that, I don't like it.

I have always loved this name. Even though it is very high in popularity for my tastes, I am considering Ruby for my next daughter. It is simple, classic, solid, and feminine.
A big meh. I don't think there's a more expected girls name in England right now. It had some vibe once, now it's just meh.

Generally seen as down market in the UK by virtue of it's excessive use. In some parts of the US it's still considered toothless hillbilly along with Pearl. It's nothing to write home about and I've always found rubies gaudy.

Ruby - short, sweet, and simple. What more could you ask for?

A hooker with a heart of gold? It's ok. Ridiculously overused in certain areas.

I think this is a stunningly gorgeous name that would fit a female person quite well, and I think it would be a good name for a pet rabbit.
I agree! It makes a much better pet form for Reuben. It's a little strange for a girl in my opinion. Sure, I can see it on a girl, but I really don't like it for one.
I have always known Ruby for a girl's name. It just doesn't really sound right masculine. Sorry.

My great grandmother (my maternal grandfather's mother) bore this name, although she was not especially fond of her name: "Ruby Lee White". I'm ambivalent about the name, but I like it because it's from a family member and that it's unique without being strange and doesn't sound ditzy.
Such a sweet name, very natural and makes you smile.

I plan to use this someday, I adore it. I have a great great aunt named Ruby, called Bea (bee), and she is the nicest lady in the world. I love the name!
