Meaning & History
From the Roman cognomen Rhodopianus meaning "from Rhodope". Rhodope was the name of a late Roman and early Byzantine province as well as of a mountain range. In both cases, the name is ultimately of Thracian origin. Also compare Rhodope, of which the first element is ultimately etymologically related. This name was borne by saint Rhodopianus the Deacon, who was martyred during the reign of the Roman emperor Diocletian (244-311). His original name was most likely Rhodopianos, since he lived and died in the eastern part of the Roman Empire, where Greek was the dominant language.
