Meaning & History
Welsh form of the old Celtic name *Rigovellaunos, perhaps meaning "most kingly" or "lord-ruler" (from rhi and gwallon). This name belongs to several characters in the Welsh 'Triads' (11th- to 14th-c.), including a son of Urien "who fought against the Saxons and enjoyed a number of victories". It was also borne by a half-brother of the 11th-century ruler Gruffudd (or Gruffydd) ap Llywelyn.
