恋 does not simply mean “love,” but ROMANTIC love, as in, sexual or infatuation-type love. It does not refer to love in the general sense. Please do not name your child this thinking it means “love” as we use it ever-so-broadly in English! [noted -ed] But yes it also means lotus (蓮) and other meanings, depending on the kanji. Another spelling alternative for English would be Wren, as in the bird.
In The Tailor of Enbizaka novel, one of the main character's son's name is Ren. Kokutan-douji later used the name "Ren" while talking to the titular tailor.

In Welsh the name Ren means Ruler. In English it can mean Raven and in Latin it means Born again: Rebirth. There are many different meanings of Ren as well as different places people think the name originated from.
Kind of ironic how Ren the Chihuahua in Ren and Stimpy is everything but loving. But I think this is a nice name, not too short and simple to the point of boredom. And of course I love flowers or anything flowery.
It's already been said, but the first person I think of when I hear the name "Ren" is Ren McCormick from the famous Broadway play and movie "Footloose."(Exchange from Broadway Play, during song "On Any Sunday", between Ren and Rev. Moore)"This morning we welcome to our parish two new souls, just arrived from Chicago! Ethel McCormick, and her son. Ron is it?"(mumbled) "Ren.""Hm? Speak up, let the Lord hear your voice!""Ren! Ren McCormick.""Ren, interesting name. Is it short for something?"(curtly) "No."
The name Ren is also used by the main female character in the Japanese Manga DearS. It is an abbreviation of her true name, which is Ren Ren Ren Nagusaran Rensia Roroonren Nakora. In the DearS language, Ren means "zero" or "nothing". She is very beautiful and sweet, so I like it very much.
Must be a more recent trend if it's way up there for boys because I never met any just plain "Ren"s in Japan of either gender. Though there was a Karen, which is pretty rare in Japanese.
In Confucianism, Ren is the summation of human virtues; it's the inner cultivation of conscience and character. The Analects is the earliest Chinese text that stresses the concept of Ren, which has been translated as “benevolence,” “humaneness,” or simply “goodness.”
