Meaning & History
Means "fortieth" in Latin, from quadraginta "forty". The number 40 has many biblical references, including the 40 days Jesus fasted in the wilderness before beginning his ministry, and the 40 hours he lay in the tomb before the resurrection. This was the name of an Italian saint, a shepherd and deacon at Policastro, Salerno. According to the 6th-century pope Saint Gregory I the Great, Quadragesimus restored a dead man to life.
