Meaning & History
The first element of this name is not quite certain. Through a variant spelling, it might be derived from of one of the following two Greek adjectives: πρῶτος (protos) meaning "first, earliest" and πρωτός (protos) meaning "destined". If not, then it might be derived from the Greek verb προθέω (protheo) meaning "to run before/forth, to outrun" or from the Greek verb προθύω (prothyo) meaning "to sacrifice, to offer first". Both verbs contain the Greek preposition πρό (pro) meaning "before, forth, forward".The second element of this name is derived from the Greek noun ἀνήρ (aner) meaning "man". As such, there are several possible meanings for this name, ranging from "the first man", "destined to be a man" to "the man who runs in front of everyone" (perhaps in the sense of him being a leader or adventurous or progressive). In Greek mythology, Prothoenor was one of the Achaean leaders in the Trojan War.
