Placida Gardner Chesley (1879 — 1966) was an American medical doctor and college professor. She was the City Bacteriologist of Los Angeles, and worked in Europe with the Red Cross during World War I.
Also used in Spanish.

Placida means literally "placid", as in calm and unhurried.
In the fairy tale "Prince Vivien and the Princess Placida", Princess Placida is very lazy and slow, and Prince Vivien is very impatient and hurried, but in spite of this major difference, they fall in love. However, the only way to live happily ever after with each other was for Placida to catch the Trotting Mouse and the Chaffinch-on-the-Wing, which requires a great deal of speed and endurance, and for Vivien to catch the Rosy Mole, which requires a great deal patience and moving slowly. Thus, when they had finally caught these things, their faults had been cured!
