Meaning & History
From Egyptian py, of uncertain etymology. It could be from Meroitic *𐦧𐦢 (*pi) “to live”, thus meaning "the living one", or from Egyptian pꜣ (pa) “O, he of, this of, that of” combined with ꜥnḫy (ankhi) “living one”, thus meaning "O living one". This was the name of an ancient Kushite king and founder of the Twenty-fifth Dynasty of Egypt, who ruled Egypt from 744–714 BC.
