Meaning & History
Derived from Dutch pink meaning "pinkie" (as in, the little finger) combined with the Dutch suffix -el and the Dutch diminutive suffix -tje. Also compare the Dutch verb pinkelen meaning "to shine" as well as "to twinkle, to sparkle, to flicker".In Dutch literature, this is the name of Pinkeltje Witbaard (his surname translates to Whitebeard in English), the main character of the popular children's book series Pinkeltje written by Dick Laan (1894-1973). He is a white-bearded gnome who was named so because he is the size of a human's pinky finger. As such, he is known as Fingerling in the anglophone world.
